Iron Man Website Updates
The Crossing crossed offMay 14, 12 I've put up a synopsis for last week's AVENGERS VS X-MEN #3, which winds down from the battle in #2, and sets up for more fights in #4. This looks like being a regular pattern, with the even issues being the battle issues, with some of the fights expanded in that month's AvX: Versus issue.
And I've finally completed the Crossing crossover with a 2-issue epilogue starting in FORCE WORKS #21, which heralded the end of that series. I've also added links in the other epilogue in AGE OF INNOCENCE: THE REBIRTH OF IRON MAN, which kicked off the Teen Tony sequence. That only lasted for 7 issues of the main series, before Iron Man went into the Heroes Reborn universe and became an adult again.
T Vernon gives us Tales of Suspense #69-71 starting here. This is Iron Man's first 3-parter, introducing Titanium Man, a character who's still around, although lately someone else has taken over his armour.
The Captain America library hasn't provided any Iron Man guest appearances this week. But over there Peter Silvestro has written up Black Widow: Deadly Origin #3-4, completing the series I started back when I was a freelance contributor.
And finally, I've added some comments to Julio's review of the Avengers film here.
Iron Man no more (well maybe, but probably not)May 7, 12 Here's the new IRON MAN #516. It's the start of a new storyline, but is really a transitional epilogue to the last story. The cover spells it out:- Iron Man No More. (Shades of Amazing Spider-Man #50 [the 1st one], but Tony Stark's not going to put the armour back on as quickly.)
I'm saving Avengers vs X-Men #3 for next week.
This week I've reached what is technically the end of the Crossing crossover, although there are some epilogues left for next week too. I've put up synopses for Force Works #20, War Machine #23, Iron Man #324 and Avengers #394, and I've added connections in Av: Timeslide, IM #325 and Av #395 which Peter Silvestro uploaded for me a year ago. These issues fall into 2 legs starting with FORCE WORKS #20 and IRON MAN #324, merging (slightly) for the finale in Av#395.
Iron Man is a full-blown villain now, even in his own title, but of course redeems himself in the finale, leading into the short-lived Teen Iron Man era. Av #395 also has comments summarising whole crossover.
T Vernon is back, adding the Iron Man tales to Tales of Suspense #67 and #68 starting here. These are single-issue stories that both happen to feature Count Nefaria. He will go on to become the more powerful villain known just as Nefaria. But his main claim to Iron Man fame is that he is the father of Madame Masque.
Peter has loaded the New Avengers issues during Siege to the Captain America library, and NEW AVENGERS (2005) #64 guest stars Iron Man.
He's also added links between that and New Avengers Finale, like those I put in the Crossing. (But I learnt the trick from Peter's links in the Heroes Reborn World War 3 issues.) However we have realised that users can only follow links in the library that created them. So Iron Man readers can follow my Crossing links, but not Peter's Cap links, and vice versa.
(Strictly speaking we can set a link up for any library, but only one library. And it makes sense that I'll be doing IM-based links, and Peter will do Cap-based ones.)
Marvel's The Avengers Movie PageMay 2, 12
The Avengers movie (2012) is finally in theaters worldwide. It debuts a day after tomorrow, on May 4 in the USA. Check out the Avengers Assemble Movie page for information, comments and photographs.
Note: A detailed synopsis containing spoilers will be posted AFTER the movie is shown in the USA. It is currently a short description of what the movie is about.
Falling off the Avengers wagon big timeApr 30, 12 I've now done last week's AVENGERS #25 and AVENGERS VS X-MEN #2. AvsX#2 is one long battle scene, where combatants still manage to talk to each other. Av#25 isn't really an AvsX tie-in, it's rather a postscript to the Osborn affair.
I've added the Crossing issues Iron Man #323, Avengers #393, Force Works #19 and War Machine #22 starting here. All 4 titles are represented this time. The Avengers feature heavily in IM as well as Av. Mantis returns and Kang finally shows up. (Except of course that she's a Space Phantom and he's really Immortus.) And I list Iron Man as a villain from Av#393. (Next week he'll have the dubious pleasure of being a villain in his own title.)
Iron Man guests in Peter Silvestro's current CAPTAIN AMERICA #10.
T Vernon is taking a short breather from his cataloguing of early Iron Man appearances.
And I've just seen the Avengers movie, which is out here in England before the US. Spectacular, but with lots of one-liners and several laugh-out-loud bits. My favourite scene is probably the one with Hulk and Loki. "Puny god!"
Going cold turkey from Avengers?Apr 23, 12 I've added a synopsis and comments for the new IRON MAN #515, but I'm leaving Avengers #25 and Avengers vs X-Men #2 for next week. This issue leaves Stark defeated by Mandarin's cunning plan at the end of the Demon storyline. Expect a new storyline starting next issue telling how he fights his way back.
T Vernon's provided the Iron Man tales for Tales of Suspense #64-66 starting here. #64 features Hawkeye and Black Widow (in a costume for the first time), in their last appearance before joining the Avengers cast. The other two are also single-issue tales, with Iron Man vs his original armour and Attuma.
I've also uploaded the next batch of Crossing issues Force Works #17, War Machine #20, Iron Man #322, FW#18 and WM#21, starting here. Note that there are no issues of Avengers this time. But I still didn't manage a completely Avengers-free week, as there is a major Avengers presence in IM#322.
But the heroes are still only battling the minor villains, and each other. After stepping out of the shadows in one of last week's issues, Mantis has dropped out of sight again. And Kang still hasn't been revealed, although there are more clues to his involvement.
Bingeing on AvengersApr 16, 12 Negotiations with an outside source to cover Avengers vs X-Men seem to have fallen through. So I've produced synopses for #0-1 starting here. They both include Iron Man, and I also get to feed my Avengers habit.
Meanwhile I'm continuing with the Crossing crossover. At that time (with Captain America presumed dead {yes it's happened before [several times]} and Thor long absent {does this seem familiar}) the Avengers family of titles was built around Iron Man (although he hadn't been a member for a while either):- Avengers, Iron Man, Force Works (led by Iron Man) and War Machine (the other Iron Man). The Crossing was officially an Avengers crossover, but centred intimately on Shellhead.
I've put up the next set of Crossing issues Force Works #16, Avengers #391, Iron Man #320, Av#392, IM#321 starting here. Notice that War Machine isn't officially in the mix yet, after the 2 prelude issues I gave him last week. Minor villains and supposed allies continue to add to the confusion, but major player Mantis at last appears on the scene, although Kang's still staying behind the curtain. And Iron Man begins to realise he may be a bad guy not a hero this time.
T Vernon contributes the Iron Man parts of Tales of Suspense #62-63 here. #62 contains the origin of Mandarin, concluding a 2-parter which was only Iron Man's 2nd continued story. And the 1st such had featured Mandarin as well. Also #63 is the end of Shellhead's 1st extended plotline from #59. Things are slowly building towards what will be the standard fare for the split books:- Long continuous stories where nearly every issue is a cliff-hanger.
Resurrecting the CrossingApr 9, 12 I've temporarily stopped documenting the recent Matt Fraction era of Iron Man, after only 1 storyline The Five Nightmares, in favour of an older set of issues.
A few weeks ago I uploaded some synopses that had been languishing in the submissions pile for a while. I felt it was my duty to deal with submissions from other folks first. But now I can handle my own old submissions with a clear conscience.
Just before Julio retired from active day-to-day control of his sites, I had sent him a complete set of The Crossing crossover between Iron Man, Avengers, Force Works and War Machine, where Iron Man was the central character. A few of the issues also featured Captain America, and Peter Silvestro put those on his library. But the rest remained in limbo. I can now add those to the system.
Having said they are issues I wrote up a while ago, in fact the bulk of the additions to the library this time are Force Works #15 and War Machine #18-19. These are issues that aren't officially part of the crossover, but contain details that belong to it. I had mentioned them in my original comments, but now I have documented them in full. Apart from those I have only added Avengers #390 so far.
I have included links in the synopses, which you can click to navigate the issues of the crossover in read-order. The trail starts here with Av#390. Apart from the issues mentioned above, I have so far also linked in Iron Man #319 and Avengers: The Crossing 1-shot, which Peter had already loaded. The 1-shot is where the crossover really starts. More next week.
You can follow all the links if you start in the Iron Man library, because all the issues are attached to that library. However the Cap library only has the few issues that mention its star, and you can't follow links from there to solely Iron Man issues. Av#391 will contain a reading guide, when I get to it next week.
Meanwhile the juggernaut that is T Vernon continues by adding the Iron Man stories to Tales of Suspense #60-61 (starting here), which Stark now shares with Cap, as well as comments on #59. They include appearances of the by-now favourite villains Black Widow, Hawkeye and Mandarin.
These issues are part of a storyline running through #59-63, where Stark is confined to his armour to stay alive, and so Iron Man has difficulties explaining why his 'boss' is missing. 2 weeks ago we saw Iron Man's 1st continued story in #54-55. This is his 1st plotline continued across several stories.
At the eleventh hour Peter's Cap library provided CAPTAIN AMERICA (1998) #5 where Cap leads the Avengers against Hydra, who turn out to be led by a Skrull long before the Secret Invasion.
Another report from the archaeologistsApr 2, 12 No current comics this week. Issues with decimal numbers like Avengers #24.1 aren't currently accepted by Julio's software. And we're hoping to get the Avengers vs X-Men series from a new contributor. Meanwhile you'll have to content yourselves with more stories from various past eras.
I've finished the Ezekiel Stane story The Five Nightmares from the Initiative period in Invincible Iron Man (2008) #5-7 starting here.
And T Vernon continues his chronological exploration of the oldest Iron Man tales from Tales of Suspense #56-57 starting here. ToS #57 introduces another major player Hawkeye, and throws in Black Widow as well. Oh, and #56 brings us the Unicorn, a minor villain who gets killed off in the 80's. 2 other guys use the name later, but neither of them are deemed worthy to be included in Mandarin's army in the recent Invincible Iron Man #513.
TV has now reached the stage where the ToS issues are already on the database because the Captain America tales have already been documented. #58 contains a Cap/Shellhead team-up/fight to introduce Cap to the ToS audience. And #59's Iron Man story has already been done by Kevin Hollander. TV promises to continue from #60. Meanwhile he has added an insightful comment to #58.
Lastly from the Heroic Age we get more overflow from the Cap Library with Avengers: Prime #1-5 reuniting the Big Three Avengers in an Asgardian romp starting here. I understand Peter Silvestro has been working on this series since January. And Hawkeye illustrates his longevity by making an appearance in the first and last issues.
