Iron Man Website Updates
Iron Man saved by a (walking, talking) treeJun 17, 13 New Avengers #7 has been delayed until next week, so it seemed there might be no new issue to report on here. But then GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #3, itself 2 weeks late, dropped in to save the day. As does Groot in the comic itself.
Peter Silvestro's FEAR ITSELF: THE FEARLESS #7 again includes Iron Man and a load of Avenging buddies. But this time Shellhead doesn't even rate a mention in the synopsis.
After New Avengers: Illuminati v2 #2 (and a diversion back to T Vernon's continuity to add #1) the next relevant issues in Iron Man's Extremis era are New Avengers v1 #2-10. But Peter has already written synopses for these, so I've just added comments. There are 2 arcs here:- #1-6 Breakout (which brings most of the team together) and #7-10 Sentry (which adds him as the last member featured on the cover of #1). (IM wasn't actually in #1, but Peter put it in the IM Library anyway.)
TV himself rates IRON MAN (1968) #42 up by another ½ star. This issue starts a sequence of 5 issues connected by cliffhangers like in the old Tales of Suspense days.
3 ages of Iron Man, plus the movie one and an alternate cyborgJun 10, 13 Now that Iron Man month is over I've at last got around to adding an IRON MAN 3 movie synopsis.
And speaking of films, Peter Silvestro has contributed THOR: THE DARK WORLD PRELUDE #1 which actually fills in the cracks between the movie-Thor's own film and the Avengers' one.
I've got a bumper bundle of 3 new issues this week:-
IRON MAN #11 continues the secret origin of baby Tony Stark, explaining why he'll grow up to be an alcoholic playboy war-monger, but a genius at it.
AVENGERS #13 concludes a 2-parter with High Evolutionary and the zebra-striped kids in the Savage Land. Lots of scope for me to write comments linking to past events in the Marvel U. But it's really been a filler story, waiting for Infinity to start. As with last week the Armoured Avenger literally phones in his appearance, from deep space.
AGE OF ULTRON #9 is mainly a 3-hander beteen Henry Pym and 2 Wolverines, but cyborg Iron Man, Invisible Woman and Ultron do put in appearances.
Peter continues documenting Fear Itself: The Fearless, and this time #6 features Shellhead and some other Avengers.
In between Iron Man #40 that T Vernon gave us last week and this week's #41 our hero was involved in the Kree/Skrull War in Avengers #93-97, which I synopsised some time ago before I took on this job. Continuity implantation via the origin flashback in the New Avengers: Illuminati v1#1 1-shot told us that Iron Man immediately formed the Illuminati. NA:I v2#1 showed us that they then went to confront the Skrulls. So in the spirit of filling in important issues in IM's early career, I've documented the issue here. (If I'd been more on the ball I'd have done it last week, and so processed #1 and #2 in order.)
TV's IRON MAN (1968) #41 shows the series' rating inching up painfully slowly. There are more 1-issue enemies, but this time working for a master villain Mr Kline who won't last that much longer, despite featuring in Daredevil at the same time.
The Illuminati don't kill Rae LacosteJun 3, 13 Guardians of the Galaxy #3 has been delayed for 2 weeks, so this week's only new synopsis is for NEW AVENGERS #6. Another Earth gets destroyed, this time by the Illuminati themselves. But it's OK 'cos it's barren.
The current strangely-numbered Iron Man miniseries (which I haven't been documenting) terminates with Iron Man #258.4. It's definitely not a continuity implant set near #258. For instance Rae Lacoste gets killed, Justin Hammer discovers Iron Man's identity and Jim Rhodes gets his War Machine armour early. It also can't really be an alternate timeline starting from there. Rae is revealed as actually Madame Masque, which can't share a past with either of their futures in the main timeline. What it could be is the storyline that Layton & Michelinie intended to do before John Byrne took over.
The Illuminati crop up again in my 1st synopsis of the Extremis era, after the comments I added to the original Extremis story last week. In #2 of their own title here they gather together the Infinity Gems (which they have since recently lost again in New Avengers #3).
T Vernon's rating for IRON MAN (1968) #40 is up, but not by much. Marianne Rodgers 1st displays the psychic ability that will blight her future. And Kevin O'Brien begins to display the irritability that will escalate to get him killed very soon.
Would you hire Dr Octopus as a nanny?!May 27, 13 In AVENGERS#12 Tony Stark is running a remote Iron Man suit in the Savage Land by a hyperspace link from wherever he is in space with the Guardians of the Galaxy. A bunch of Avengers are trying to teach morals to the alien kids spawned by Ex Nihilo's origin bomb. When 2 of them are Hawkeye and the Dr Octopus version of Spider-Man maybe it's better that High Evolutionary kidnaps them.
There's not much else Iron Man'y out this week. Iron Man #258.3 still has me confused as to exactly how the mini-series fits into the Marvel megaverse. I suspect now that it's not so much an alternate timeline continuing from #257 as a What If Bob Layton had continued writing the series, including revelations that affect previous issues.
Also this week I'm starting to look at the Extremis era of Iron Man vol 4. As well as the Iron Man series I'll be dealing with guest appearances that I'm interested in such as New Avengers, Illuminati and Young Avengers. I'll be covering the selected issues in the order suggested by the Official Index.
First up is obviously the Extremis story itself in Iron Man #1-6, the seed for the current film. But the big boss Julio has already written synopses for these issues. So you'll have to be satisfied with my inimitable added comments, starting here.
T Vernon has given IRON MAN (1968) #39 an even lower score than the last one, but TV promises they get better soon. However he also says enjoys writing about the bad stuff because it gives him more scope for inventive commentary. This issue is the 1st of 2-parter involving a Mandarin-caricature called White Dragon.
