Iron Man 2: Full Synopsis
WARNING: Spoilers Ahead!
After his father's demise, Russian physicist Ivan Vanko swears to kill Tony Stark, son of the man Vanko blames for his father’s misery.
Vanko is a brilliant engineer.
In his Siberian home, he builds a skeleton with two metallic whips powered by a reactor similar to that of Iron Man, based on a design by Vanko’s father and Tony’s father (who worked together in the past until Stark Sr. fired him).
Meanwhile, billionaire Tony Stark is loved by his fans, and pushed by the American government to release his Iron Man invention to the military.
Weapons industrialist Justin Hammer corners Tony during a Senate hearing; but Tony shows proof that Hammer is incompetent, for which Hammer loses a contract with the government.
Refloating an old idea from his father, Tony decides to present Stark Expo, a large technological convention in New York; he opens it with a great entrance as Iron Man.
Tony is the man who has it all: money, smarts, women, fame… except for one important thing: health.
Tony is dying.
The reactor in his chest that keeps him alive uses palladium which is slowly poisoning him.
Unfortunately, Tony has been unable to find a replacement for the palladium and his time is running out and fast.
Words ellude him to inform his destity to his friends, secretary and right-hand person Pepper Potts, or Colonel James Rodhes.
But he does name Pepper as the new Stark Industries’ Chief Executive Officer.
And keeps a nice surprise in store for James.
With a few days left to live, Tony decides to “buy” a seat as a driver and competes in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Everything is going well, until Ivan Vanko steps into the circuit with his skeleton and metallic whips: Enter “Whiplash”.
Vanko destroys several cars, including Stark’s.
Harold "Happy" Hogan and Pepper arrive in time to deliver Tony his suitcase which turns into a new Iron Man armor.
But it takes both Tony’s smarts and the full might of his armor to defeat Vanko.
Nevertheless, the enemy laughs, saying that he’s won because the “god” has bled and many will come to kill him.
Back in America, Tony celebrates his (last?) birthday with a party at his home, inviting dozens of beautiful girls who are nuts about him.
Tony is wearing his Iron Man suit, gets drunk, pees in his armor (!), and uses repulsor rays to shoot at the bottles his amused audience throws in the air for him.
Pepper and James cannot believe their eyes.
Pepper fails calming Tony down, so James puts on the silver Iron Man armor and demands Tony to behave.
The Iron Men fight, nearly destroying the residence.
Tony finally calms down, and James takes off, wearing the silver armor.
Previously, Tony had allowed the silver armor to be worn by James; this was the surprise for his friend.
Nick Fury from S.H.I.E.L.D. contacts Tony Stark, who learns that beautiful Nadia, a new employee at Stark’s Legal department, was actually a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Natasha Romanov, AKA the Black Widow.
Natasha applies Tony a shot that stops his illness temporarily.
Fury assures Tony that only his inventiveness can find the replacement for the palladium, and hands him material from Tony's father that could help him.
Fury also reveals that Stark Sr. was a founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Tony goes through his father notes but finds nothing.
He has a bad memory of his father.
But in an old film he watches as his father sends him a message saying that his son was his greatest creation.
And that he will do what he could not.
Tony discovers in the Stark Expo scale model from his father, hints to create the new element to replace the palladium.
And using a home-made particle accelerator, he’s able to do it.
Tony fuses the new element to his heart reactor, and is healthy as ever. “Thanks dad”.
In the meantime, Justin Hammer helped fake Ivan Vanko’s death in prison, and brought him to America to work for him.
Vanko turns faulty soldier armors intro powerful androids that Hammer think will secure him a long contract with the DOD.
Hammer is also hired by the government to supply weapons for the silver Iron Man suit, to turn it into Machine Man.
Secretly, Vanko runs his own agenda.
But after ignoring several of Hammer directives, Hammer locks Vanko in his company under the custody of two large security guards, while he goes to the Stark Expo to present his androids, and the upgraded Machine Man.
Vanko kills the guards and calls Tony Stark, who discovers that Vanko is going to attack the Stark Expo.
Iron Man reaches it while Hammer was giving his presentation.
Vanko takes control of both the androids and Machine Man, and attacks Iron Man.
With civilians in danger, Tony tries eluding his cybernetic enemies outside, asking his software assistant JARVIS to break Vanko’s control over Machine Man, to no avail.
Finally, Iron Man resorts to brains to destroy half the androids.
Meanwhile, Happy drives the Black Widow to Hammer Industries, where she uses her awesome combat skills to defeat all in her path but one, who Happy barely defeats himself.
Natasha enters Vanko’s room, but he’s gone; yet she’s able to use his computer to reboot Machine Man, and Rhodes regains control of his armor.
It’s the final battle between the androids and the Iron Men, where Tony gives the final blow.
But then Whiplash, in a new, superb armor, comes in and barely destroys them. They manage to defeat him at the end.
Yet it is not the end. Whiplash hid time bombs in his armor and the androids.
Pepper is next to an android, and Tony reaches her in the nick of time to save her.
Pepper succumbs to stress and resigns from being the “boss”; Tony accepts his job back, and they kiss.
After seeing them, Rhodes flies away with the Machine Man armor, without intended to give it back.
With Justin Hammer in jail, the U.S. government decorates both James Rhodes and Tony Stark for their bravery.
And Nick Fury talks to Stark about his new super hero group, the Avengers.
